LOCAL RESTAURANT SCENE
RESTAURANT CLOSINGS JUMP IN 3RD QTR 2026
There are many reasons why a restaurant might close, but in the Charleston area market at least, the number of restaurant openings-to-closings ratio stays pretty consistent from quarter to quarter. However, the latest quarterly tally of 32 restaurant openings versus 20 closings gave me pause. The closings list is sprinkled with a few one-offs like a move to a new space or a rebranding to a new name / concept under the same owner. Still, 20 is a lot of closings for us, and for the most part, it's local concepts closing that were the proud offspring of their founders' imaginations. As I read about restaurant profit margins slipping again nationally, I can only hope that more local entrepreneurs are willing to find a way to backfill these spaces with well-executed, original concepts and continue to fight the tide of rising costs so that we don't lose the sense of place and culture that homegrown restaurants create in our neighborhoods.------------------------------------------------------------
NATIONAL RESTAURANT SCENE
IS ALL THIS TECH ACTUALLY BOOSTING PROFITS?
A recent article in Restaurant Business Online visits a restaurant tech convention and reports that many operators (+/-40%) say their tech spending is not reducing operating costs as expected. Meanwhile, restaurant margins are slipping downward to around 4% nationally. It seems that AI has turned into a bad word these days as consumers in general don't favor AI tech to improve their lives, much less handle their drive-thru order. I'm glad I'm not trying to sell restaurant tech these days! Read all about it here...---------------------------------------------------------------------------

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
DO YOU HAVE A LASER FOCUS ON FOOD COST?
A recent issue of Nations Restaurant News features a piece by Kenneth Goldberg in which he breaks down the importance of granular food cost analysis versus simply reviewing input costs as a percentage of sales. Everyone in the kitchen needs to know where the food cost dollars are spent so that they can get onboard with the program, be held to account for operating an efficient kitchen, and then benefit from the profit rewards they help create.
